A. UNITED NATIONS ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COMMISSION FOR ASIA AND THE PACIFIC ( UNESCAP )
1. Establishing status of quality management system- As Central Consultant to ESCAP (15 May-December, 95) conducted detailed study by launching fact finding missions to 9 countries namely China, India, Indonesia, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam to establish status of implementation of ISO 9000 Quality Management Systems on national and enterprise level in ESCAP region. This study included:
i) Adoption of ISO 9000 Series in the national system,
ii) Status of implementation of ISO 9000 by industries,
iii) Status of national accreditation system for certification bodies and testing laboratories.
2. Development of consultative mechanism- As Resource Person organised Consultative Expert Group meeting (8-14 Feb, 96) on "Regional Cooperation on the Adoption of ISO 9000 Series" where finding of the fact finding missions were presented and a consultative mechanism was envisaged to pursue the matter further. Nine countries of the region participated.
3. Cascading the theme of ISO 9000- As consultant prepared a two stage plan:
i) Preparation of theme papers (15 Oct-15 Dec, 96) for different workshops envisaged by the consultative expert group
ii) Presentaion of theme papers at "ESCAP-Thailand Cooperation Workshop on ISO 9000" (18-23 Aug,1997) where 8 countries -Bangladesh, Indonesia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Viet Nam participated.
4. Promotion of transfer of environmentally sound technologies& ISO 14000- As Consultant (May-Dec, 1998) assisted in the development of conceptual framework for "Regional Cooperative Policy Mechanism to Promote the Transfer of Environmentally Sound Technologies and ISO 14000". The study was conducted by launching missions to India, Malaysia, Republic of Korea and Thailand where wide spread consultations were done involving related organizations in these countries.
5. Adoption of Regional consultative Mechnism- Resource Person ( 21-28 October 1998) for the meeting of Committee on Environment and Natural Resources Development of ESCAP held in Bangkok and Resource Person ( 26-28 October 1998) For conducting workshop of participating countries for development of "Regional Cooperative Policy Mechanism to promote the transfer of Environmentally sound Technologies". The countries participated were Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, India, Iran, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Republic of Korea and Thailand.
6. Establishment and operationalization of national accreditation system- As Advisor to ESCAP ( 25Jan-5Feb, 99) provided advisory services to establish and operationalize National Accreditation System for ISO 9000 & ISO 14000 certification bodies and setting up of an ISO 9000 Certification Body in Pakistan. Also establishing criteria for launching National Quality Awards.
7. Regional capacity building programme- As consultant ( August-December, 99) for the project "Regional capacity building for the adoption of ISO 14000":
i) Prepared training Manual for training on adoption of ISO 14001
ii) Conducting national seminars in 7 countries namely, Bangladesh, China, India, Nepal. Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
8. Resource Person (27 Nov-02 Dec,1999) for Regional Cooperation Workshop on "Quality and Environmental Management System and Environmentally Sound Technologies at Kish Islands, Iran.
9. Integration of Environmental and Quality Management systems-As Consultant (July2002-May 2003) for the project on "Integration of Environmental and Quality Management Systems in ESCAP Region":
i) developed training course material for the integration of environmental and quality management systems with special emphasis on SME's;
ii) conducting National Seminars on Integration of Environmental and Quality Management systems in 9 Countries namely Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Viet Nam,
iii) Organization of regional workshop with participating countries to recommend the follow up.
B. UNITED NATIONS INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION ( UNIDO )

International Consultant (23 Sep-15 Oct, 96) - Appointed by UNIDO as one of the international consultants on " Standardization, Quality Assurance and Metrology" to join UNIDO Team for Industrial Technology Development Study Mission in Ghana to provide a plan for infrastructural development for sustained growth. This inter alia included establishment of National Accreditation Council and Certification bodies for ISO 9000& ISO 14000.

C. COMMISSION ON SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN THE SOUTH (COMSATS)

Resource person of Commission on Science & Technology for Sustainable Development in the South for conducting a three-day " COMSATS Seminar on ISO 14000" in Islamabad from 7-9 March 2000

D. STUDY VISITS ABROAD
1. Visited to United States of America (USA) (1991). This included study of the programmes on standardization, quality systems certification, national quality award and accreditation of testing laboratories:
i) National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) - To study operation of Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award & Central Enquiry Point under Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT).
ii) American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)- To study practices of standards formulation and providing secretariat facility, full text of standards in electronic media for easy retrieval and dissemination.
iii) American National Standards Institute ( ANSI) - To study national structure for accreditation of certification bodies for quality management systems and quality management personnel certification scheme.
iv) Underwriters Laboratories Inc (UL) - To negotiate the possibility of taking consultancy for laboratory modernization and upgradation of testing facilities and for operation of quality system certification.
2. Visited to Canada (1991). This included study of the programmes on standardization, quality systems certification, auditors training and accreditation of testing laboratories:
i) Standards Council of Canada (SCC) - To study national accreditation scheme for standards writing and certification bodies and testing laboratories and operation of Central Enquiry Point under GATT Standards Code.
ii) Canadian Standards Association (CSA) - To study standards preparation, operation of product certification and laboratory testing Scheme.
iii) Quality Management Institute (QMI) - To study certification of quality management system in Canada and training of quality system auditors and exploring the possibility of memorandum of understanding with BIS in the area of quality system certification and training of personnel.
3. Visit to World Bank, Washington (1991)- For further negotiation on new projects on standardization and quality system and working out modalities for implementation of Seven approved projects.
4. Visit to U.S.S.R (now Russia) (1986) - Participated in a week long discussion meeting on harmonization of standards on Rational use of Energy Resources.
5. Visit to Sweden,( 1991)- International training for 5 weeks on `Standardization Management Techniques' organized by Standardiserings Kommissioneni Sverige SISS services, Stockholm.
